Following the success of the inaugural bike ride around the beautiful Lake District in 2009 the 2010 route provided participants with a slightly longer challenge in a different part of the world. The ride started and finished in the Dales market town of Settle and provided options of a challenging 40mile or tougher 60 mile route.

Both routes passed over the long ascent of the Cross of Greet in the morning before meeting for lunch at Ingleton with the short route heading back to Settle via Clapham in the afternoon whilst the long route headed north to Dentdale and back via Ribblehead Viaduct.
A total of 16 hardy souls lined up at the start in Settle and included two tandems (John and Jo of RJM being bravely joined by Duncan and Rachel of BAM Ritchies). Once bacon sandwiches courtesy of Richard and Alison from Drift Ground Investigation had been eaten the obligatory starters photo was taken and the ride was off.
From the off it was clear that the RG Parkins team were not there for the scenery as they set a blistering pace in time trial format. Others adopted a slightly more leisurely approach with increasing frequency of coffee and flapjack stops as the day progressed. After a good lunch in Ingleton the toughest of the tough headed through Kingsdale and down the very steep descent into Dentdale whilst the more sensible opted for the quickest route back to the pub in Settle. Celebratory beers back in Settle were followed by a celebration dinner at the Golden Lion Hotel where stories of the day’s heroics were exchanged and suitably embellished.
A big thank you is due to all those that helped make the day such a success, especially Richard and Alison of Drift who provided pre-ride food and drinks and vehicle support throughout the day. Finally a big thank you to everyone who sponsored the riders and who helped raise the fantastic sum of £2,152 for the Lavender Trust at Breast Cancer Care.
Next year sees a change in format for the event and a move to a location closer to the RJM office in Arnside. Full details will be available shortly, but the event will provide a fun challenge for everyone along with the obligatory post ride food and beers. We look forward to seeing our friends, colleagues and valued clients there next year.
RJM is excited to announce the launch of a Continuous Surface Wave ground profiling service providing accurate and economical non intrusive determination of the ground stiffness profile; vital for accurate assessment of ground movements in response to loading or excavation. In addition the technique provides a useful tool for assessing improvements in ground stiffness due to shallow ground improvement techniques such as dynamic compaction or stone columns.
